WHAT IS AN ELECTRICAL TRANSCRIPTION?

Electrical transcriptions, also known as transcription discs or "ET’s", were the most common way of preserving radio broadcasts during radio's golden age.

ET’s made after the mid-1930's are usually aluminum-based 16"discs coated with cellulose nitrate lacquer, a thick black compound similar to that used in automotive paint from the 20's thru the 50's. These shiny blank ET's, sometimes known as "acetates," were used to create what became known as instantaneous recordings, records which could be played directly after being recorded. A large record cutting machine (essentially a phonograph with a heavy and precisely regulated turntable, coupled with a cutting-head mechanism and precision lathe screw drive) was used to cut a groove into the coating, creating an audio recording of the program. 16" ET’s were usually recorded at 33 1/3 RPM, the same speed as the long playing. They generally run about 15 minutes per side; thus, a half-hour program is commonly recorded on one side of two ET’s.

WHAT ABOUT THIS SET?

These are VERY, VERY RARE. Radio Transcription Archives, a renowned company dealing in these ET’s, tells me these are the only ET recordings of a television show they have ever seen.

After some checking, here is what we found:

These discs came from the estate of Danny Thomas. The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS) was a spin-off from the "Make Room For Daddy" TV show. Danny Thomas went on to become Executive Producer for TAGS. These discs were created for Mr. Thomas’ private use the VERY FIRST TIME THEY AIRED ON TV. They lay in his basement for over 40 years. After Mr. Thomas passed away the new owners of his house were doing some remodeling and found these great discs boxed up in the basement. They were going to THROW THEM AWAY! But lucky for us a contractor decided to keep some of these discs and I purchased the discs from him.

This Windows Media Audio (WMA) DVD contains 28 EPISODES and ½ episode (one disc was broken) of TAGS made from 57 of the original transcription discs (2 discs per episode). It contains what you would have heard during the FIRST EVER airing of this great TV show, INCLUDING COMMERCIALS! You will hear cast commercials for Sanka Coffee, Post Cereal and others. You will hear Andy, Opie and Aunt Bee singing songs for different products! This hasn’t been heard for over 40 YEARS!!

This DVD disc will play on your home computer and some DVD players that accept WMA files. However, you can copy the WMA files to CD for use in your car or portable CD player. great for listening while your mowing your yard!
